Seasoned bodybuilder Wellington ‘Bulldozer’ Mwangonde has become the second Malawian to secure International Federation of BodyBuilding and Fitness (IFBB) professional licence in Luxembourg.
The three-time Mr Malawi runner-up, who relocated to Cologne, Germany, last year, underlined his class during last week’s Diamond Cup contest.
The feat has enabled him to emulate the exploits of Emmanuel ‘Muscle Manzy’ Muhuwa, who collected his badge in South Africa, two years ago.
Mwangonde said he was thrilled to have qualified for the professional card.
“I want to thank God for the gift of life that enabled me to work hard and reach this point. I also want to express my deepest gratitude to my family for their unwavering support throughout this journey. It was not easy.
“A special thanks to my coach @e.kisler for the incredible work and 120 percent dedication to me, helping us achieve this together,” Mwangonde wrote on his Facebook page.
The bodybuilder took after his father Issac Mwangonde, who is the country’s first Mr Malawi winner.
Winning a pro card as a bodybuilder is a significant milestone that opens up opportunities, both professionally and financially.
Bodybuilding analyst Desire Kambewa said Mwangonde has opened a new chapter in his career.
“With a pro card, Wellington can now compete in professional bodybuilding competitions such as the IFBB Pro League events. These competitions typically offer larger prize pools, sponsorship opportunities and greater visibility.
“Winning a pro card can attract the attention of supplement companies, fitness brands and apparel companies. Sponsors provide financial support, free products and endorsement deals,” Kambewa said.
Additionally, a pro card allows bodybuilders to compete for prestigious titles, such as qualifying for the Mr. Olympia contest, the most recognised competition in bodybuilding.
“Overall, a pro card elevates a bodybuilder from the amateur ranks into the professional circuit, providing access to more lucrative opportunities and greater recognition within the industry but is also good because he will be representing Malawi,” he said.
