Silver Strikers have said they will not release head coach Peter Mponda to Malawi National Football Team after the Football Association of Malawi (Fam) appointed him without consultations.
This comes after Fam released a statement Friday indicating that Mponda has been appointed as first assistant to coach Kalisto Pasuwa with immediate effect.
In an interview Friday, Silver Chief Executive Officer Patrick Chimimba, who is outside the country for further studies, said the club was not consulted on the appointment of Mponda.
“We cannot release our employee before being approached formally. The coach is employed by Silver Strikers Limited and we needed to be engaged first before the announcement. The FA should just be professional by doing the right thing. Courtesy is important,” Chimimba said in a written response.
However, Chimimba said they will engage Fam on the matter.
“We can only release when approached and we weigh the pros and cons of Mr Mponda leaving our football project at this crucial stage,” he said.
Fam has turned to the former Warriors mentor to solve Flames woes after the sacking of Patrick Mabedi on Wednesday.
The association’s executive committee held a virtual meeting yesterday and agreed to hand Pasuwa the role with immediate effect.
However, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Chief Executive Officer Albert Chigoga was yet to respond to our questionnaire as went to press yesterday.
Apart from Mponda, Moyale Barracks coach Pritchard Mwansa will be second assistant to Pasuwa.
Former Flames coach Kinnah Phiri and Young Chimodzi senior have been appointed as technical advisors.
Fam Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka asked for more time before commenting on the matter.
Pasuwa is expected to lead the Flames for the remaining two Afcon matches against Burundi and Burkina Faso.
The Flames will face Burundi on November 15 in Ivory Coast before hosting Burkina Faso at Bingu National Stadium four days later.
Mabedi was sacked on Wednesday following poor performance in all competitions.
