Mighty Mukuru Wanderers maul Mighty Tigers, keep title hopes alive

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have reduced the gap between them and leaders Silver Strikers to four points and set up an explosive finish in the 2024 TNM Super League title race.

The Nomads produced a vintage performance as they thumped Mighty Tigers 5-0 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre Sunday.

Following the win, Wanderers have 50 points from 25 matches whereas Silver have 54 points but the latter have a match in hand.

Wanderers have remained with five matches against Creck Sporting Club, Moyale Barracks, Silver, Bangwe All Stars and Mafco.

On the other hand, Silver will face Wanderers, defending champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, Baka City, Mafco, Fomo and Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos.

At this stage, it is a two-horse race between Silver and Wanderers whereas Bullets are considered as dark horses as they trail the leaders by 10 points, with six matches to go.

Wisdom Mpinganjira opened the floodgates in the ninth minute before Gaddie Chirwa doubled the lead in the 29th minute.

The two teams went for recess with the scores at 2-0 in favour of the Nomads.

Isaac Kaliati increased Wanderers lead when his scored his 15th goal of the season and cemented his chances of winning the golden boot award before substitutes Misheck Botoman and Francisco Madinga sealed the victory.

Wanderers Assistant Coach Bob Mpinganjira said they would fight until the last match.

’”We will fight in the remaining games to get all the points to increase our chances in the title race,” Mpinganjira said.

For Tigers, the defeat means they are just six points away from the relegation zone, with 28 points from 27 matches.

Tigers Coach Leo Mpulula said he was disappointed with the outcome of the match.

“’We have been humiliated. It unfortunate that we lost to struggling teams,” he said.

Elsewhere, Mzuzu City Hammers failed to move to position three after they were held to a goal-less draw against Creck at Mzuzu Stadium.

Hammers have 44 points from 28 matches, below third-placed Bullets on goal-difference.

In Lilongwe, Civil Service United and Kamuzu Barracks shared the spoils after a goal-less stalemate at Civo Stadium.

Civil are fifth with 39 points from 26 matches whereas KB are seventh with 37 points.

At Dedza Stadium, Promise Kamwendo scored the only goal as Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos defeated Moyale 1-0.
