Malawi Women’s National Football Team starlet Rose Kabzere has said she is ready for a new challenge as she left the country Thursday to join Montpellier Herault Sports Club (Women).
The talented youngster signed a three-year contract with the French top flight club after turning 18 in July this year.
However, she was waiting for her visa to travel to France.
Before departure at Kamuzu International Airport, Kabzere said she has what it takes to shine in Europe’s top women’s football league.
“It is a dream come true for me. I am ready to face new challenges and prove my worth. I want to put Malawi on the map,’’ she said.
She will become the second Malawian to play in D1 Arkema League after Scorchers captain Tabitha Chawinga, who joined champions Olympique Lyonnais at the end of her season-long loan deal with Paris Saint Germaine.
Montpellier has beaten a host of clubs to the signature of the talented midfielder, who was also linked with teams in Sweden, Denmark, Australia and South Africa.
Ascent Soccer Director of Operations Thom Mkolongo was confident that she would do well.
“We know her qualities and we believe she will perform according to expectations. It will not be easy for her at first but we urge her to make new friends so that she adapts quickly to the demands of European football,” Mkolongo said.
Kabzere was an influential player for the Scorchers when they won their first ever Cosafa Women’s Championship after beating Zambia 2-1 in South Africa last year.
She assisted Sabina Thom’s winner during the match and scored one goal in 8-0 victory over eSwatini.
She was nominated for the 2023 Cosafa Women’s Most Promising player award which her teammate Leticia Chinyamula won during the Cosafa inaugural awards.
National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) Chairperson Adellaide Migogo was excited with Kabzere’s breakthrough.
“We are very happy for Rose. This is an indication that we have talented women footballers in Malawi,” Migogo said.
Kabzere won the Cosafa Under-17 Women’s Championship golden boot award after scoring eight goals at Bingu National Stadium in 2022.
She inspired the team to win bronze during the competition which was part of the Region 5 Youth Games.
Kabzere attended trials at Caf Champions League champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies last year.
