Temwa Chawinga named Freshwater Project brand ambassador

Freshwater Project International (FPI) has named Malawi women’s national team striker Temwa Chawinga as its freshwater brand ambassador.

FPI Executive Director Heidi Rickels said on Tuesday that Temwa’s extraordinary journey from her rural village in Malawi to the world stage of women’s professional football mirrors the strength and resilience FPI strives to foster within communities, schools and health centres.

“Temwa’s incredible spirit and passion align perfectly with our mission to uplift communities through clean water and sanitation,” Rickels said.

The organisation says it believes that access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (Wash) facilities is fundamental for heathy lives and vibrant communities.

On her part, Temwa said she was committed to using her platform to ensure that young girls have myriad opportunities to thrive and succeed.

“Every girl deserves to attend school without fear or lack of knowledge and resources. By addressing these issues, we can empower and help Malawian girls to stay in school and build a brighter future,’’ Temwa said.

According to the statement, Freshwater is piloting a programme in Malawi to enhance its ongoing school water and sanitation projects, with its Health and Hygiene Campaign featuring Temwa.

Temwa’s manager Theana Kuwala Msolomba said the Scorchers’ striker had decided to invest a larger part of her benefits in Malawi communities.

“Temwa has chosen six schools, some of which will benefit from construction of wash infrastructure and over 12, 000 beneficiaries in line with project areas,” she said.

Temwa, who signed for Kansas City Current on a two-and-a-half-year deal in January this year, is the leading goal scorer in the National Women’s Super League (NWSL) with 17 goals.

She was the top goal scorer in the world last year after scoring 63 goals for both club and country.

Temwa won the Golden Boot award as she led Malawi to the 2023 Cosafa Women’s Championship title.

Before joining Current, Temwa won four consecutive titles with Chinese side Wuhan Jianghan University.

She scored 83 goals in 84 matches for the club.
