Striker Temwa Chawinga continues to hog the limelight in the National Women’s Super League (NWSL) as she is one goal short of the all-time record for goals scored in a single season.
The Malawian netted the equaliser for Kansas City Current in a 1-1 stalemate against Gotham FC at CPKC Stadium Sunday.
The goal means Temwa has taken her tally to 17 in her debut season in the US.
She also cemented her chances of winning the golden boot award in the NWSL as she is four goals above her closest challenger Barbara Banda from Zambia, who plays for Orlando Pride.
“The goal marked Chawinga’s 17th of the regular season, and Chawinga is one goal away from matching the NWSL regular season scoring record,” Kansas website reported Sunday.
Temwa could not hide her excitement about her feat in the US.
“It feels great to score in almost every game. I thank teammates for their support,” she said.
Temwa was also named in the NWSL Best X1 of August. This was her third time to be named in the Best X1 in her debut season.
She was named as the overall top goal-scorer in the world after netting 63 goals for both club and country.
