Malawi poster girl Temwa Chawinga has been named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the National Women’s Super League (NWSL) in United States of America following her impressive performance.
The NWSL released the list Friday, with the Malawian attacker beating the likes of Zambian Barbara Banda, Marta, Trinity Rodman and Sophia Smith to win the accolade.
The Scorchers forward rounded her debut season in style, becoming the first Kansas City Current player to achieve the feat after an impressive record in her debut season.
“The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) announced today [Friday] that Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga has been voted the 2024 NWSL Most Valuable Player.
“Chawinga is the first player in Current franchise history to earn MVP, capping a historic 2024 season for the Malawi international,” the league’s website reported.
The site acknowledged that Temwa rewrote the history books after posting the most impressive offensive season in league history.
“Chawinga became the first player in NWSL history to score 20 goals in a single season, record a goal in eight consecutive regular season games and score a goal against every other NWSL team since the league expanded to 10+ teams. Chawinga won the 2024 NWSL Golden Boot, also becoming the first player in franchise history to earn the honour, as she posted the highest regular season goal total of any NWSL player,” the website read.
Temwa also holds the record for most goal contributions having scored 20 total goals and six assists in 2024.
“Chawinga also set the NWSL’s single-season record for goal contributions. In all competitions, Chawinga recorded 24 goals and eight assists for the Current,” the site reported.
Temwa paid tribute to her teammates, coaches and management.
“It is about teamwork. On my own I could not have achieved this,” she said.
The development comes after Temwa and her elder sister Tabitha earned nominations for the 2024 Caf Women’s Footballer of the Year award following an outstanding season at their respective clubs.
