Tough targets for Meke Mwase

Tough targets for Meke Mwase
HUMBLED—Mwase

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have tasked Meke Mwase to win at least two trophies this season.

This comes after the club confirmed Mwase as the head coach Sunday following the team’s impressive performance in recent matches.

Wanderers Chief Executive Officer Panganeni Ndovi confirmed the development yesterday.

“We are still discussing some of the details of his contract including the duration. But we have tasked him to win at least two trophies out of the three trophies remaining. Wanderers is a big brand; so, we want to reclaim glory,” Ndovi said.

Wanderers are still in contention for a treble this season as they have a chance to win the TNM Super League title.

Currently, Wanderers are second on the table with 41 points from 20 matches.

The Nomads have a slender advantage to progress to the semi-finals of the Airtel Top 8 after beating Bangwe All Stars 1-0 in the first leg.

They will face Mulanje District champions in the Castel Challenge Cup Round of 64.

Ndovi said after a thorough review of Mwase’s performance, it was beyond reasonable doubt that he deserved the job.

“Mwase has done well as interim coach. We believe he will continue performing well until the end of the season,” Ndovi said.

The former Flames mentor had been acting coach following the resignation of Burundian mentor Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan in May this year.

At the time of taking over, Wanderers had 12 points from eight matches in the league, 10 points behind Silver Strikers.

Since then, he has only lost two matches to Moyale Barracks 2-1 in the TNM Super League before a similar defeat to arch-rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in the FDH Bank Cup round of 16.

Mwase said he felt honoured by the trust shown in him.

“It is good to be given such a huge responsibility. But I will not comment on the targets set by the club,” Mwase said.

National Football Coaches Association (NFCA) General Secretary Davie Mpima faulted Wanderers for setting tough targets for Mwase.

“It is not good to set unrealistic targets for coaches. Winning two trophies is not easy. Competition is very tough,’’ Mpima said.

Wanderers finished last season empty handed.

They last won a trophy in 2022, when they clinched the Airtel Top 8. The Nomads last won the TNM Super League in 2017.
