Ascent Academy derailed

Malawi’s representatives in Caf Women’s Champions League/Cosafa Qualifiers, Ascent Academy, were kept waiting for a semi-final slot after they lost 0-1 to UD Lichinga of Mozambique at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre, Sunday.

However, Ascent can reach the semifinals if they beat Gaborone United of Botswana Tuesday.

Top two teams from both groups will qualify for the semifinals.

Following the win, Lichinga top Group B with four points, one ahead of second-placed Ascent, who defeated Young Buffaloes of eSwatini 2-1 in their opener.

Buffaloes lie third with two points where as Gaborone anchor t h e group on a single point.

Despite the defeat, Ascent Coach Thom Mkorongo was optimistic that his charges would reach the semifinals.

“In the next match, we will come back stronger and, believe me, qualify for the semi-finals,” Mkorongo said.

Lichinga Coach Eduardo Bonomar was excited with the victory.

“The match was difficult as we played against the hosts. We are happy to be on top with four points,” he said.

During the match, Faith Chinzimu thought she had given Ascent the lead but her effort was ruled out for offside.

Celia Miguel scored the lone goal in the 74th minute to give Lichinga victory.

In Group A, Herentals of Zimbabwe are dictating events with six points from two wins whereas South Africa’s University and Zambia’s Green Buffaloes are tied at three points each.

Ongos of Namibia anchor the table without a point.
