The Confederations of African Football (Caf) has increased annual honoraria for presidents for each of the 54 member associations (MA) to $50,000 (about K87.5 million) from $25,000.
Caf President Patrice Motsepe said during the launch of the Caf Football Management Executive Programme for MA General Secretaries at the University of Cape Town in South Africa on Monday
Motsepe said the resolution to increase annual gratuity would be passed at the next Caf Congress in Kinshasa, DR Congo.
“You will see that what we are doing now, as we are going to the national general assembly, we are dealing with something that is complex but the time requires that. Some of your presidents have no resources, they have got nothing and they got to run the member associations out of their pockets.
“So, we have decided we are going to make a token contribution to every president in every member association. We cannot pay them but [give them] a token of gratitude and sacrifices,’’ Motsepe is quoted as saying.
The increase comes as Motsepe is seeking a second term as Caf president. He also said there are plans to consider supporting secretaries-general from struggling countries.
“But there is a plan as well, the people who run the office. The people who are going to wake up in the morning, look at office, run the management and that is why what we are doing here is critically important,” Motsepe said.
Football Association of Malawi President Fleetwood Haiya confirmed the development on Tuesday.
“It is a blessing to Malawi football as I committed the same to football development in Malawi,” Haiya said.
During his first press briefing at Mpira Village, Haiya made the commitment that his annual allocation from Caf would go towards football development.
