Clubs to offload ‘excess baggage’

Some Super League clubs have announced plans to use the mid-season transfer window to offload their bloated squads.

The transfer window is expected to open Thursday.

In separate interviews Tuesday, both Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Creck Sporting Club revealed their intentions to trim their squads.

Wanderers Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Panganeni Ndovi said the club aims to have a manageable squad of 28 players for the season.

“We promoted some players from the reserve side and about three of them have requested loan deals to gain game time. Although the deals are not finalised, we will give them the opportunity to play as they are still young,” Ndovi said.

Times Sport has learned that Wanderers are expected to release about five players once the transfer window reopens.

However, Ndovi indicated that while there will be departures, the club also plans to strengthen its squad.

Wanderers are likely to be in the market for a defender following the departure of captain Lawrence Chaziya, who has joined TP Mazembe.

The Nomads, along with Creck and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, have been linked with Mzuzu City Hammers defender Wongani Lungu.

Creck Chairperson Muhammad Selemani said the club plans to release eight players.

“We have a large squad, so we want to retain at least 30 players for the senior team,” he said.

Creck is close to signing Chitipa United defender Chris Liwemba.

Meanwhile, TNM Super League leaders Silver Strikers have been linked with Wanderers midfielder Vitumbiko Kumwenda and Moyale Barracks striker Allan Emmanuel.

However, Silver Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Patrick Chimimba declined to comment on the matter.

“It is unprofessional to discuss players from other clubs,” he said.

Nevertheless, Silver is expected to unveil Friday Osagie and Levison Maganizo this week. Silver leads the table with 37 points from 15 matches, 12 points ahead of second-placed Wanderers.
