Catch them if you can! Free scoring Silver Strikers delivered yet another strong statement in the TNM Super League title race with an emphatic 5-0 hammering of Mzuzu City Hammers at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe Thursday.
The victory came just days after the Central Bankers showed great character to force a 2-2 stalemate against Kamuzu Barracks.
But Thursday, Silver, who are hunting for their first title in 11 years, were superior against a side that kept chasing shadows for the better part of the match.
The result means the Bankers have won the first round with two matches to spare.
The league leaders have 33 points from 13 matches, nine points above second-placed Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.
Hammers remain fourth on the table with 21 points from the same number of matches.
It was one-way traffic as Hammers failed to match Silver with man-of-the-match Macdonald Lameck taking matters into his own hands, scoring one goal and providing three assists.
Lameck opened the floodgates just five minutes into the match before providing an assist for Chinsinsi Maonga in the 19th minute for Silver to double the lead.
Stain Davie put the game beyond Hammers’ reach in the 27th minute with the third goal.
The two teams went for recess with Silver leading 3-0.
Soon after recess, substitute Paul Kansungwi scored the fourth goal for Silver before Davie hammered the last nail on Hammers’ coffin in the 69th minute.
A visibly delighted Silver coach Peter Mponda said his troops deserved the win.
“We dominated possession throughout and credit should go to the boys. We are taking things game by game as we prepare for Fomo,” Mponda said.
His Hammers counterpart Kondwani Ikwanga said his charges were jittery especially in the first half.
“The early goal unsettled us and we played under intense pressure. We made so many mistakes at the back,” Ikwanga said.
Wanderers also delivered a perfect response to their 2-1 loss to Moyale Barracks last week with a 2-0 beating of Chitipa United at Kamuzu Stadium.
Cameroonian striker Sama Thierry Tanjong was the hero of the day as he opened his scoring account at Lali Lubani Road with a brace.
At Dedza Stadium, Dedza Dynamos and Kamuzu Barracks shared spoils after a 2-2 stalemate.
Victor Lungu and Marko Chiwaya were on target for Dedza whereas Olson Kanjira and Zeliati Nkhoma scored for KB.
But Moyale collected full points away from home with a 2-1 beating of Baka City at Karonga Ground.
Luke Chima and Khumbo Mhone scored for Moyale whereas Maxwell Mangwere netted for Baka.
