Fam hails police for seizing counterfeit Flames jerseys

The Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has praised the Malawi Police Fiscal and Fraud Unit for confiscating 71 suspected counterfeit Malawi National Football Team jerseys from a fashion shop in Blantyre.

Fam Marketing and Broadcasting Manager Tulipo Mwenelupembe said they alerted the police upon discovering counterfeit merchandise bearing their brands in the market.

“We are grateful to the Malawi Police Service for their ongoing efforts to combat the sale of counterfeit replicas and protect consumers from fraudulent products.

“We hold exclusive rights to all jerseys branded ‘Moto’, which are officially registered as our intellectual property.

“We also own the brand names Flames and Scorchers for the Malawi men’s and women’s national football team, respectively, registered with the Trademarks Registrar,” Mwenelupembe said.

National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya disclosed that the jerseys were seized during an operation that led to the arrest of one individual.

The suspect faces charges related to possessing counterfeit trademark items, as outlined in Section 388 Sub-section (d) (e) of the Penal Code.

“After Fam reported the issue, we launched an investigation which resulted in the arrest of one suspect. Further inquiries are underway to apprehend additional suspects and determine the source of the products,” Kalaya said.
