Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has touted government and other stakeholders after successfully hosting Caf Women’s Champions League/Cosafa Qualifiers at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre.
The competition ended on Saturday with South Africa’s University of the Western Cape (UWC) beating Gaborone United of Botswana 9-8 on post-match penalties to lift the regional showpiece.
Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda said the hosting of the qualifiers was a success.
“We managed to deliver a tournament within a short time of preparations. We, as Fam, are very grateful to the government for accepting that we host the competition.
“We had limited time to prepare but, thanks to all our stakeholders and partners who supported the process through the Local Organising Committee, we worked tirelessly to deliver the qualifiers, led by madam Felister Dossi, who chaired the team,” Gunda said.
Gunda applauded fans for patronising the games aimed at improving women’s football.
“We successfully brought fans to the stadium, something that is unique to Malawi. In other countries, they have low stadium turnout.
“We, as Malawi, once again made a point in our commitment to the development of the women’s game and created a platform for attracting the interest of women and girls as well as prospective sponsors towards the game, which continues to make significant strides,” he said.
UWC will now join South African compatriots Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies at the continental finals later this year.
Malawi’s representatives Ascent Soccer Academy bowed out in the group stages.
