Mighty Mukuru Wanderers Head Coach Meck Mwase has reportedly gone on absent without leave (AWOL), leaving his employers guessing on his whereabouts and next move.

Mwase allegedly surrendered car keys to Wanderers Club House in Blantyre soon after the team suffered a 1-0 defeat to Silver Strikers in the Airtel Top semifinal, which came a week after the side lost 2-1 to rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in a league match.

Following his absence, assistant coach Bob Mpinganjira took charge of the squad when Wanderers thrashed Mighty Tigers 5-0 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Sunday.

Inside sources alleged that the Flames former mentor was not happy with the way he was treated by a section of supporters and some senior members of the team.

“Fans and some officials directly accused him of making poor team selection, which they claimed resulted in the team losing to the Central Bankers.

“Mwase was also accused of poor game tactics when Wanderers lost to Bullets in a league match. It was a result which put the teams’ title chances in jeopardy. Fed up with all these accusations, he decided to stay away without informing any of the board members, not even the club’s chief executive officer,” the source said.

Mwase’s phone was unreachable.

Panganeni Ndovi

Wanderers Chief Executive Officer Panganeni Ndovi was elusive in his response.

“Wanderers cannot respond to speculations. If at all there is a necessity to respond to various inquiries from the media, Wanderers will come up with a statement at the appropriate time,” Ndovi said.

Mwase was initially hired as an assistant to Wanderers former coach Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan, who resigned in May after the side suffered two successive defeats to Silver and Mzuzu City Hammers by 2-0 margins.

Ramadhan resigned three months after picking the job when he returned to Wanderers.

Meanwhile, Wanderers have reduced the gap with leaders Silver Strikers to four points from seven, having beaten Tigers.

Wanderers have 50 points, four below leaders Silver, who have played a match in hand.

However, the Nomads have scored the highest number of goals in the league; that is, 51 against Silver’s 43.
