NBS Bank pumps K155 million into Presidential Golf

NBS Bank pumps K155 million into Presidential Golf
GRATEFUL—Chakwera

President Lazarus Chakwera Thursday unveiled Malawi Stock Exchange-listed NBS Bank as the diamond sponsor of the 2024 Presidential Charity Golf Tournament slated for next month at Country Club Limbe.

NBS Bank has pumped K155 million into the tournament, which seeks to raise K600 million to help needy but bright students access higher education as well as survivors of Tropical Cyclone Freddy.

NBS Bank Deputy Chief Executive Officer Temwani Simwaka said the decision to sponsor the tournament was easy to make as it resonates well with what the bank believes in.

According to Simwaka, NBS Bank is involved in many sports activities for the charity cause.

“This particular golf tournament attracted us because of its aims, which are to support the vulnerable and, at  the same time, support university students. This talks to us, NBS Bank, as a caring bank.

“Again as part of our corporate social responsibility, we also support the vulnerable through bursaries and sponsorships to university students.

HUGE STATEMENT—Simwaka

“So we realised that the cause is the same and, therefore, it was very easy for us to join hands with the Presidential Golf Initiative and support it and, at the same time, lead in terms of the private sector presence. We believe it is our responsibility to help in driving the private sector to partner in causes of this nature,” Simwaka said.

Chairperson for the 2025 Presidential Charity Golf Tournament Gift Kawamba said the tournament would be played over a period of two days and would involve 200 golfers.

Kawamba said they decided to take the tournament to Country Club Limbe because it has an equally better golf course, just as that at Lilongwe Golf Club.

In his address, Chakwera hailed NBS Bank for what he described as an extraordinary partnership that embodies the true spirit of solidarity, generosity and patriotism.

“I am extremely happy to unveil NBS Bank as the main sponsor of 2024 Presidential Charity Golf Tournament. I want to thank NBS Bank for joining hands with me in this worthy cause of uplifting the lives of Malawians in the spirit of servant leadership.

“The decision by NBS Bank to sponsor this year’s Presidential Charity Golf Tournament with a donation of K155 million is a monumental gesture, not just in monetary value but in the tangible hope it inspires in others to do their part and to do it together,” Chakwera said.

The Malawi leader observed that by stepping forward as the diamond sponsor of this year’s Presidential Charity Golf Tournament, NBS Bank had shown that it cared.

“The two causes towards which we are raising this money are not inconsequential.

“In fact, my administration is already channelling so many resources into both the reconstruction efforts to rehabilitate communities devastated by last year’s Cyclone Freddy and the education of young people in our public universities, including a significant increase in the allocation of per diems to students that I ordered to be effected earlier this year.

“But even with the deployment of public resources to these needs, there is still a role to be played in these social needs by the private sector and private citizens, because the rebuilding of lives, communities and the nation demands an all-hands-on-deck approach. So I am delighted that NBS Bank has made the wise choice to lead the way in this regard,” Chakwera said.

This year’s Presidential Charity Golf Tournament will be played on October 11 and 12.

Vice President Michael Usi is expected to tee-off on the first day while Chakwera is expected to preside over the prize presentation ceremony on the second day.
