Malawi Women’s National Football Team striker Temwa Chawinga scored as her club Kansas City Current registered a 1-0 victory over North Carolina Courage in National Women’s Super League (NWSL) playoffs Sunday.
The win means Kansas advanced to the semi-finals of the NWSL playoffs for the first time since 2022 and they will face Barbara Banda’s Orlando Pride next week.
Pride defeated Chicago Red Stars 4-1 in their opening match. The Malawian added to her record-breaking goal tally when she bundled the ball into the net from close range in the eighth minute.
So far, Temwa has scored 23 goals for the club in her debut season in all competitions.
She has already won the golden boot award after netting 20 goals in the regular season.
Temwa is a favourite for the NWSL player of the season award after winning three player of the month awards.
On top of that, she is the first player to score against all 13 active teams in a single season.
Temwa said she was happy with the performance of the team.
’”We are into the semi-finals of the playoffs. We look forward to the big match against Orlando Pride,” she said.
According to US media, Temwa was seen wincing on the ground with a cramp.
Kansas coach Andonovski said Temwa needed protection from referees.
“If you look at the season, every game, they are overly physical against Temwa,” he said.
The 26-year-old striker has, for the past three seasons, set records for both clubs and country in all competitions.
Last year, Temwa was the overall top goal scorer in the world, having netted 63 goals for country and club.
She won the three golden boot awards while playing Wuhan Jianghan in China last year.
Her elder sister Tabitha Chawinga, who plays for Olympique Lyonnais in France, has also started the season on a high note after scoring five goals in seven matches.
Tabitha was named player of the season in France and also won the golden boot award with 19 goals.
