Temwa Chawinga scores 14th goal, sets new record in US

Malawi Women’s National Football Team forward Temwa Chawinga has taken the United States of America Women’s League (NWSL) by storm, leading the 11-member league by 14 goals.

Temwa was on target when her side, Kansas City Current, lost to North Carolina Courage 2-1 on Sunday.

The Malawian forward set a new record of scoring in seven successive matches.

However, her goal was vital as she opened a two-goal cushion over second-placed Zambia’s Barbara Banda, who plays for Orlando Pride.

Chawinga’s goal helped Kansas to move to third position on the table with 35 points from 18 matches.

The team is nine points behind leaders Orlando Pride.

The 26-year-old player opened the scoring in the 67th minute before Carolina’s forward Vine Brooke Cortnee got the equaliser five minutes later.

Midfielder Brianna Pinto sealed the win for the home side.

However, Temwa downplayed her goal, saying she would have loved it if Kansas had won.

“My goal is to simply help my team win the championship. All I want is to win the league. Leading the goal scorers’ chat is one of the things I consider normal,” Temwa said.

Meanwhile, National Women’s Football Association Chairperson Adellaide Migogo has described Temwa as a rare talent.

“She is a beast and workhorse. Temwa is a team player who always wants to win as a team and her biggest weapon is discipline.

“I would love to see a lot of up-and-coming women footballers emulating her example if they are to excel in their career,” Migogo said.

Last season, Temwa scored 53 goals for both club and country while playing for Chinese giants Wuhan Jiangda. She won three golden boot awards in China.
