A second draw on the road

A second draw on the road

Mighty Tigers had to come from behind twice to deny Silver Strikers a ninth win of the season and hand them a second draw in a four-goal thriller on Monday afternoon at Kamuzu Stadium.

Duncan Nyoni opened the scoring at 6 minutes when Mark Fodya curled in a beautiful corner that proved difficult for the hosts to clear, giving Nyoni to mark his return to the team with a goal.

Mighty Tigers looked composed after conceding the goal and started compiling pressure, but their short corners did not trouble the Bankers.

21 minutes into the game Paul Kansungwi was introduced for Emmanuel Muira. His introduction brought rhythm in midfield as five minutes later Kansungwi was involved in a move that led to Binwell Katinji having a shot on goal but the Tigers’ goalie was up to the task.

At halftime, Stanie Davie was thrown into the fray when Nyoni was rested. Eight minutes into the second half Mighty Tigers equalized through Messiah Kachingwe.

Chimwemwe Idana was introduced in the 59th minute for Mark Fodya and the Central Bankers got hold of the midfield battle. It was by no surprise that at 78 minutes Nickson Mwase headed home a corner by Uchizi Vunga to regain the lead.

Silver Strikers was forced to finish with ten men after Binwell Katinji was stretched out after sustaining a head injury and at that time all substitution slots had been used.

Nine minutes from time, Chisomo Mpachika was introduced for Kansungwi. In added time, Mighty Tigers leveled the scores after a well-executed freekick that saw Chimwemwe Ibrahim producing a long-range shot that Chikooka couldn’t do anything.

The equalizer was the last action for the match.

Head Coach Peter Mponda said his side played a good match as they controlled the game well but the result is part of it.

“We had a fantastic game today as we played very well. We were in control of the match as the hosts were not allowed to create a lot of chances however, we failed to defend a move at the end of the match which cost us the game. But getting away from after scoring two goals is not bad, on to the next one”, said Mponda.

Silver Strikers remain unbeaten from the 10 games played and remain on top of the log table with 26 points. The Central Bankers are scheduled to play Civil Service United at CIVO Stadium on Sunday.
