Athlete stumbles but improves record at Paris Paralympics

Local visually-impaired athlete Estere Nagoli failed to progress to the next round of this year’s Paris Paralympics in France despite improving her record in T12 200 metres (m) event Friday.

Estere finished fourth, in heat three, at 32:11 seconds, attaining her personal best, surpassing her record which was at 33:0 seconds.

Malawi Paralympic Committee (MPC) President James Chiutsi said they were impressed with her performance.

“Up until now, Estere’s record stood at 33:0 seconds in AUSC Youth Games in Lilongwe. Aged only 19, Estere was amongst the youngest contestants, whose ages ranged from 27 to 35 years,” Chiutsi said.

Her compatriot Moses Misoya ended on position eight in T13 400m on Thursday having crossed the finish line in 54:27 seconds, in a process setting a new personal best record, which previously stood at 55:00.

The two athletes competed on wildcard parametre, an equivalent of solidarity.

However, Team Malawi’s other two athletes Mphatso Saukile and Taonere Banda did not compete as they were withdrawn on technicalities as per World Para Athletics’ quota requirements.
