Silver Strikers have exited from the 2024 Castel Challenge Cup on Tuesday after going down 4-3 on post match penalties against Panthers FC after a two all draw in regulation time.
The Bankers made 10 changes to the side that won the semifinal match over the weekend.
Panthers FC broke the deadlock when Geoffrey Sumani scored after he was set up by Junior Malidadi at 47 minutes before Malidadi himself doubled the lead three minutes later when he curled in a corner into the net.
At 77 minutes, Duncan Nyoni pulled one back after he headed home a corner by Mark Fodya.
Eight minutes later, Nyoni leveled matters after he headed home in a similar fashion a corner that was taken by Fodya again.
The Central Bankers did all they could but the scores remained unchanged forcing the match to go in post match penalties.
Uchizi Vunga and Patrick Macheso failed to convert their spot kicks whilst the guests converted four out of the five penalties taken to sail through to the round of 16 of the competition.
After the match, Head Coach Peter Mponda said his team did not perform as expected.
“I am very disappointed with both the result and our performance but this is what happens when you underrate an opponent. We had the same thing happening to us in the FDH Cup but the script never changed this afternoon so all we have to do is accept and go forward”, he said.
Attention now turns to Saturday as the Bankers play FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in the 2024 Airtel Top 8 final at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
