Bullets get K86 million for Caf tourney

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets have all the reasons to smile as they will get a $50,000 (about K86 million) starter pack for participationg in the 2024 Caf Champions League first preliminary round.

Bullets will host Zambian champions Red Arrows in the first preliminary round at Bingu National Stadium Sunday.

Confederation of African Football (Caf) Friday announced a financial commitment of $50,000 to each of the participating clubs.

“The clubs participating in the preliminary stages of the Total Energies Caf Champions League and Confederation Cup will receive $50,000 each. This is the first time Caf offers financial assistance to clubs in this stage of the competition. Previously, clubs needed to reach the Group stages to be eligible to share the overall prize money,” Caf said in a statement yesterday.

The money is for travelling and logistical costs for taking part in the continental club competition.

However, Bullets Chief Executive Officer Albert Chigoga was not readily available for the club’s comment Friday .

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) already released a similar amount to Bullets for their participation in the 2023 edition.

The winner between Bullets and Arrows will face Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) giants TP Mazembe in the second preliminary round.

For a fifth straight year, Bullets are the only local club participating in the Caf Champions League as no local side took part in the continental showpiece since 2019.

Last year, Bullets reached the second preliminary round of the Caf Champions League after beating Equatorial Guinea’s Dragon FC 3-0 on aggregate.

However, they were eliminated in the second preliminary round following a 5-0 loss on aggregate to Mazembe.

The People’s Team lost 1-0 at home before 4-0 defeat at Mazembe Stadium in Lubumbashi.

Meanwhile, Caf also announced that this year’s champions will get $4,000, 000 from $2,000,000 in 2022.
