Four weeks into the second round of the TNM Super League, some clubs have bemoaned Super League of Malawi (Sulom)’s and Football Association of Malawi (Fam)’s delay to give them the remaining K10 million subvention.
The clubs are entitled to K20 million per season.
Out of this, K10 million was paid in the first half, with the clubs on course to receiving the other half in the second round.
However, some teams have said the delay to give them the money has negatively affected their operations, citing the rising cost of some items.
In an interview yesterday, Karonga United General Secretary Ramsey Simwaka said teams were struggling financially, especially in the second round.
“We do not have sponsorship. As such, the grant helps us a lot, in terms of operations. We asked for an update on the issue of subvention but we do not know when they will give us feedback,” Simwaka said.
Sulom paid K5 million to each of the 16 clubs from sponsors TNM plc.
They also got an additional K5 million from Fam.
Silver Strikers Chief Executive Officer Patrick Chimimba said the demand for resources is huge in the second round.
“It is tough for most clubs to run operations. We expect Sulom and Fam to expedite the process of giving us the other half of subvention to ease the challenges we are facing,” Chimimba said.
On his part, Fam Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka said clubs are aware of procedures to follow to access the grants.
“It is about fulfilling all conditions to access the money. Liquidate and get the balance,” he said.
Sulom Treasurer Allie Mwachande shared similar sentiments.
“There are procedures to be followed by the teams for them to get the money. We want to ensure that the teams are also accountable. Once they fulfill all the conditions, they will receive the balance,” Mwachande said.
Some of the conditions include proof of a current bank account held under the name of the club.
The majority of local clubs do not have steady sponsorship.
