Temwa Chawinga equals US all-time goal scoring record

Malawi Women’s National Football Team striker Temwa Chawinga believes that she is yet to hit her peak despite equalling National Women’s Super League (NWSL) all-time record in a regular season.

The talented forward netted the only goal of the match as her club Kansas City Current edged Utah Royals 1-0 at KPC Stadium on Saturday night.

She is the fifth player all-time to score 15 goals in a single season.

On top of that, she is the first African female player to achieve that feat.

Temwa, who continues to hog the limelight in the NWSL after scoring 15 goals in a regular season, said she felt honoured with the recognition.

“It feels great to score for the team as we returned to winning ways. The best is yet to come,’’ she said.

Her club’s website recognised the Malawian’s feat.

“The goal marked Chawinga’s 15th of the NWSL regular season, tying LaBonta’s franchise record for goals in an NWSL regular season set earlier this season. Additionally, Chawinga extended her league record streak of consecutive matches with a goal to eight. Chawinga is just the fifth player in NWSL history to score 15 goals in a regular season,” the Current official website reported.

Temwa has joined Kim Little (Seattle Reign FC) who scored 16 goals in 2014, Crystal Dunn (Washington Spirit) who netted 15 goals in 2015, Kam Kerr (NJ,NY Gotham 2017, 17 goals, Chicago Red Stars , 2018 , 16 goals and 2019, 18 goals) and Alex Morgan (San Diego Wave FC) who scored 15 goals in 2022.

According to the Current website, Temwa scored the 15th goal in the 47th minute after a counterattack move.

The Current attacker sprung loose following a Utah corner kick, executing a perfect counter attack to open the scoring.

Midfielder Lo’eau La Bontha pushed the ball forward and, just before the midfield, slid an inch-perfect through ball to Chawinga.

“Chawinga made no mistake after racing behind Utah’s defence for a one-on-one opportunity with Haught, slotting the ball in the back of the net,” the website reported.

Temwa was also named in the NWSL Best X1 of August on Friday.

This is her third time to be named in the Best X1 in her debut season.

She was named as the overall top goal-scorer in the world after netting 63 goals for both club and country.

Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili heaped praise on the striker.
