Chitipa United, Fomo FC in survival battle

Action in the TNM Super League resumes with a dogfight for survival between Chitipa United and Fomo FC at Karonga Ground this afternoon.

The two teams lie in the relegation zone and will be hoping to collect maximum points to enhance their survival chances.

Chitipa lie second from bottom on the table with 19 points from 25 matches and a win will only take them level on points with Fomo who have amassed 22 points from a similar number of assignments.

Unlike Chitipa, Fomo will automatically move out of the relegation zone with a win as they will cruise to 25 points and force Bangwe All Stars back into the drop zone.

But the Mulanje-based side will have to put its act together against a side that took the country’s football fraternity by finishing fourth last season.

Fomo will go into the match on the back of a 2-1 loss to relegated Baka City on Wednesday at the same venue.

Both teams are playing in the elite league for the first time.

But Fomo coach Elvis Kafoteka said they are counting on the Chitipa match to collect full points and jump out of the relegation zone.

“It was unfortunate that we lost to our fellow newcomers in the league. This is a match we needed to win because we are not safe. So we are banking on the match against Chitipa who are also struggling. We just need to give out our best and see what happens next,” Kafoteka said.

His Chitipa counterpart Christopher Nyambose said it is sad that they have now started losing matches at home.

“We used to be unbeatable at home for a good part of the season but it seems we are giving ourselves away unnecessarily. We just need to pull up our socks and do our best so that we survive relegation,” Nyambose said.

The match is the only one to be played today with four others lined up for Sunday.
