The Federation of International Hockey (FIH) has handed Malawi hockey a major boost after donating an artificial turf and about 600 hockey sticks.
Malawi National Council of Sports Chief Executive Officer Henry Kamata disclosed this on return from the World Youth Hockey 5’s Festival in Malaysia, where Malawi’s 10 member youth delegation participated in activities.
“The turf will be installed at a yet-to-be-disclosed venue in Lilongwe next year. The new turf is a huge investment to Malawi hockey. Due to the case we presented to the FIH president about the hockey development plans in the country, we were also given hockey sticks, which will be distributed in schools across Malawi,” Kamata said.
FIH, in collaboration with Olympic Solidarity, the Asian Hockey Federation, the Malaysian National Olympic Committee, the Malaysian Hockey Confederation and the Raja Ashman Shah Hockey Academy, organised the festival.
Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) General Secretary Geoffrey Biya hailed the trip as a milestone for the growth of hockey in the country.
“This opportunity not only provided the team with exposure to high-level competition but also set a foundation for the long-term development of hockey in Malawi,” he said.
In 2017, FIH gave Malawi an artificial turf and floodlights in appreciation of Ham’s youth development initiatives in 2016.
