Asimenye Simwaka gets K2 million for winning bronze

Short distance athlete Asimenye Simwaka has received K2 million for winning a bronze medal in 200 metres women category at the Senior African Athletics Championship in Douala, Cameroon, last week.

Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) gave the Malawi Defence Force athlete K1 million while Essential Tours Managing Director Chris Luwayo donated a similar amount.

Additionally, Essential Tours will host Simwaka to a dinner at Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) tonight.

Moc Secretary General Henry Sakala confirmed giving Simwaka the money as a token of appreciation for becoming the first Malawian to win a medal in 200 metres at the continental showpiece.

“We know the money is not enough but we feel it will still motivate her to aim for podium-finish at other major events. We, as Moc, did our part and we are delighted with Essential Tours Managing Director who also donated K1 million. We are glad that the company will also host Simwaka to dinner at BICC. In fact, she was given a chance to choose a hotel of her choice and she settled for BICC. The dinner will attract 20 people,” Sakala said.

Simwaka was delighted with the support.

“This is quite inspiring as I aim to break international records too to put Malawi’s flag on high,” said the multitalented athlete who also plays for the Scorchers.

She set a new national and personal record after finishing the race in 23:05 to finish third. Simwaka set another record in the 100 metres semifinals, when she ran 11:35.
