Central Bankers ‘sail’ through to victory!

Silver Strikers on Wednesday braved the rains and its aftermath to collect maximum points over Baka City FC courtesy of first half goals from Charles Chipala and Stanie Davie.

The win replicated a first round result they had against the rookies at Karonga Stadium.

With the win, the Central Bankers have stretched the lead in the 2024 TNM Super League to 61 points, seven ahead of second placed Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.

The win has also kept the Bankers’ unbeaten run to 27 games and 11 wins from their backyard out of the 14 games played.

On Wednesday, Charles Chipala opened the scores after he headed home a long pin pointed ball from Uchizi Vunga at 17 minutes when the Area 47 side had toiled for a goal from the first whilste under the rains.

At 20 minutes Binwell Katinji was replaced for Stanie Davie.

The Bankers kept the momentum going, however, the visitors fired their first shot on Silver Striker’s goal at 23 minutes when Ngesi Mwafulirwa made a good run but his effort was well saved by George Chikooka.

At 42 minutes, substitute Stanie Davie finished off a good ball from Misheck Seleman after Chipala missed the initial pass. Chimwemwe Idana was the one who orchestrated the whole move after a good turn in midfield to spot Seleman.

The Bankers took the two goal lead to half time. Recess was prolonged after the downpour continued as the field became waterlogged and unplayable. Fans had to rescue the situation by clearing the logged water to force a restart to the second half.

The visitors continued to have a difficult afternoon as the hosts continued to pile pressure for a third goal that never came.

Chikondi Kamanga and Levison Maganizo were introduced in the second half for Chimwemwe Idana and Charles Chipala.

The scores were unchanged until regulation time.

Silver Strikers Head Coach Peter Mponda said it was supposed to be a good game but the downpour disrupted the match nevertheless he was happy with the win.

“A good result at the end of the match, i should give credit to the boys for their spirit and we got a win. We could have played even better without the rains but that is something that we couldn’t control but all we wanted was a win, we got it”, said Mponda.

Silver Strikers will now travel down south to face Mighty Mukuru Wanderers on Saturday at Kamuzu Stadium before proceeding to Mulanje Park on Wednesday to face FOMO FC.
