Silver Strikers sniff title as Mighty Mukuru Wanderers hope fades

It is almost done and dusted. Silver Strikers hopes of winning the 2024 TNM Super League title got a massive boost Wednesday following 2-0 victory over Baka City at a water-logged Silver Stadium Wednesday.

But Mighty Mukuru Wanderers’ title hopes, which had been defying gravity for months, finally fell to the ground when they surrendered a two-goal lead in space of three minutes to share the spoils with Mafco at Kamuzu Stadium.

Most painful of all for Wanderers fans was how their title hopes were shattered at their own backyard.

The Nomads led for 86 minutes with goals from Lawrence Chaziya and Isaac Kaliati before Auspicious Kadzongola and Bernard Chimaimba pulled the soldiers level.

While Wanderers fans were gnashing their teeth, celebrations hovered around Silver Stadium as their match against Baka was still in progress as the match was delayed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Charles Chipala and Stain Davie scored for Silver.

For now, Silver can now smell the TNM Super League title, which has eluded them points from 27 matches, seven points above Wanderers, whose wait for the title will be extended to seven years. Silver will wrap up the title with two games to spare if they earn a point against Wanderers at Kamuzu Stadium this coming Saturday. for 11 years. They have 61

Apart from facing Wanderers, Silver will meet Fomo and Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos. Wanderers will face Moyale Barracks and Creck Sporting Club.

Silver are on the threshold of winning K100 million prize money for the TNM Super League.

A visibly delighted Silver coach Peter Mponda said his side won the title in the first round.

“We were not under pressure with Wanderers. They were playing at home if they were good enough they were supposed to win the game and put pressure on us. But it is what it is,” Mponda said.

Wanderers interim coach Bob Mpinganjira, though disappointed with the draw, insisted they still have hopes of snatching the title.

“We dropped two points, which is very bad for us. We will try to win the game on Saturday and see what will happen,” Mpinganjira said.

At Civo Stadium, Civil Service United came from two goals down to force a 2-2 stalemate against FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Wednesday.

Nickson Nyasulu and Ephraim Kondowe scored whereas Chikaiko Batison netted a brace for Civil.
