Sports Council awaits Flames report

Malawi National Council of Sports has said it is waiting for a technical report from Football Association of Malawi (Fam) to establish factors that led to Malawi National Football Team’s poor showing in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers.

The Flames finished last in the 2025 Afcon qualifiers with four points from six matches, below third placed Burundi on goal difference.

Sports Council Chief Executive Officer Henry Kamata was responding to a question if Fam had already approached them on hiring of a Flames permanent coach after the conclusion of the qualifiers.

Kamata said the technical report would help them to appreciate the factors that led to the team’s poor performance.

’’Fam is yet to give us a report on the performance of the Flames; so, we cannot discuss about the process of hiring a permanent coach,’’ Kamata said.

Last week, Fam said it would engage Sports Council on filling the vacant job of Flames coach.

Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda was not readily available for his comment yesterday.

But Gunda said last week that the mandate of the current technical panel, led by FCB Nyasa Big Bullets coach Kalisto Pasuwa, would expire once the vacancy was filled.

“In the meantime, we will continue discussions with government,’’ Gunda said.

Pasuwa is the favourite to take over from Patrick Mabedi after helping the team to collect four points in the last two qualifiers.

Malawi shared the spoils with Burundi following a goal-less draw before registering 3-0 victory over Burkina Faso at Bingu National Stadium.

But Pasuwa refused to comment on his future as Flames interim coach.

He was vindicated for recalling experienced players Frank Gabadinho Mhango and Richard Mbulu.

Mhango and Mbulu scored a goal each, with the other goal coming from Lloyd Aaron.
