Creck Sporting Club’s acting coach Joseph Kamwendo has said his team will not be drawn into the TNM Super League title race debate, despite their potential to compete for the championship.
Kamwendo, who replaced suspended coach MacDonald Mtetemera, said he does not want to place undue pressure on the players, even though they have moved into third place on the league table after a 7-0 victory against fellow debutants Baka City.
“The boys have been outstanding, but I have advised them not to get carried away by their performance.
“We should continue to take each match as it comes because there is still a long way to go in the season. They performed well, but I have not set any specific targets for them,” Kamwendo said.
Kamwendo acknowledged that Creck has a chance to compete for the championship, but emphasised that it will be a challenging task.
“If you look at the log table now, you will agree that competition is fierce. No one would have predicted that Creck, as a new team, would be in the top three.
“As a coach and management, we need to be cautious not to put too much pressure on the players as this could affect their performance,” the former Mighty Mukuru Wanderers skipper and assistant coach said.
On Saturday, Creck showed no mercy as they defeated Baka City 8-0 at Aubrey Dimba Stadium in Mchinji District.
George Chaomba scored twice, while Harvey Nasiyaya, Arnold Kiyama Son, Yamikani Tambala, Peter Godfrey and Gift Kadawati each added a goal.
Following the win, Creck now have 26 points from 16 games and trail leaders Silver Strikers by 14 points, while second-placed Wanderers have 31 points from the same number of games.
Former Wanderers midfielder Thom Milanzie said the second round will be tough as teams compete for the championship, top eight finishes and to avoid relegation.
“This is the most challenging round because you have teams fighting for the title, others aiming for a top-four or top-eight finish, and some battling against relegation. Collecting maximum points in this second half of the season is always difficult,” Milanzie said.
