It is written in the stars that two teams will progress to the semi-finals of the 2024 FDH Bank Cup as two matches have been lined up this afternoon.
The pick of the day is the match between last year’s runners-up Mafco and Karonga United at Chitowe Stadium this afternoon.
The two teams are meeting for the first time in this competition since it was introduced.
However, Mafco defeated Karonga 2-0 in a TNM Super League match in July at the same venue.
For Mafco, they will hope to translate their league form to cup matches.
On the other hand, Karonga will be looking to hurt their opponents when it matters the most.
Mafco Coach Jimmy Mzunga has told his charges to double their efforts in today’s match.
“It is a tricky match for us and we know they will come hard on us. We just need to show our quality and make sure we utilise our chances,” Mzunga said.
On his part, Karonga Coach Oscar Kaunda said playing at Chitowe is always difficult.
“Mafco are a very good side and have a good history in cup matches.
“We need to be on top of our game to get a good result,” Kaunda said.
Mafco reached the quarterfinals after beating Iponga FC 1-0 at Karonga Stadium whereas Karonga defeated Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos 10-9 on post-match penalties following a goal-less stalemate in regulation time.
In another quarter-final match, second-tier side Lube Masters will be hoping to cause an upset when they face Moyale Barracks at Mzuzu Stadium this afternoon.
Action in the FDH Bank Cup will continue tomorrow as holders FCB Nyasa Big Bullets will host Civil Service United at Kamuzu Stadium.
Bullets advanced to the quarterfinals after beating rivals Mighty Mukuru Wanderers 2-1 while Civil defeated Mighty Tigers 4-2 on post-match penalties after a 1-1 stalemate.
In another match, Baka City will face Blue Eagles at Karonga Stadium today.
The champions will pocket K30 million plus a trophy.
