First Lady Monica Chakwera has hailed Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) for its efforts to revamp netball in the country.
Chakwera, who is the matron of the Queens, made the remarks after meeting with Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) new leaders at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe Tuesday.
She said the Queens had been shinning ambassadors of Malawi, hence she was ready to support the game.
“I am particularly pleased with your initiatives to engage stakeholders from across sectors, supporting your fundraising efforts, including t h e upcoming initiatives to raise funds for our under-21 squad,” she said.
Nam has lined up a number of initiatives aimed at raising funds to support the team’s trip to the 2025 Netball World Youth Cup finals in Gibraltar.
Chakwera said she was proud that the new Nam leadership had stepped up efforts to elevate the standards of netball.
“I am especially encouraged by your plans to promote governance, accountability and transparency in the administration of the sport, as outlined in your comprehensive strategic framework.
“These principles are essential in building trust with your stakeholders, sponsors and, more importantly, the communities you serve,” Chakwera said.
On top of that, she hailed Nam for focusing on grass roots netball development and the empowerment of women and girls through sport.
“By creating pathways for young talents to thrive—from the under-15 teams to the national squads—you are ensuring that the future of Malawian netball remains bright and strong,” she said.
On her part, Nam President Vitumbiko Mwandemange-Gubuduza said she felt honoured to meet with the First Lady.
“It was a fruitful meeting with the First Lady. We are motivated to work hard to make sure that we transform netball.
“Our desire is to ensure that the Queens reclaim glory,” Gubuduza said.
On his part, Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) Chief Executive Officer Henry Kamata urged Nam leaders to double their efforts to develop the game.
At the meeting, Chakwera donated a set of uniforms for the Queens ahead of their test series matches against South Africa later this month.
