Temwa Chawinga bags US award
LIVING HER DREAM—Temwa

Malawi Women’s National Football Team striker Temwa Chawinga has been named National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Month for June by EA Sports on Thursday.

This is her first award since she joined the club from Chinese champions Wuhan Jiangda in January following the expiry of her contract.

Temwa has become a household name in Kansas City Current following her impressive performance.

The Malawian scored six goals in four matches for Kansas plus two assists to claim the accolade.

The talented striker scored in every match she played in June.

In an interview Friday, Temwa said she was living her dream in US.

“It feels good to win the award. I did not expect to win it. There are more good players in the league. The best is yet to come from me,” she said.

Temwa is the current leading goalscorer in the NWSL after scoring 12 goals and is tied with Zambian Barbara Banda of Orlando Pride.

The former DD Sunshine (now Silver Strikers Ladies) striker has also earned praise from Kansas coach Vlatko Andonovski following her impressive performance in her debut season.

“She has been amazing for us. She scores goals, she assists on goals. She has been very impactful in the games, even when she does not score,” Andonovski told Kansas website.

Last year, the Malawian female football star also had a good campaign with Wuhan when she won three golden boot awards.

She was named as the best striker in the world in 2023 having scored 63 goals for both club and country.

Temwa also helped the Scorchers to win their first ever Cosafa Women’s Championship after beating Zambia 2-1 in Pretoria, South Africa. She was also the Player of the Tournament and top goal scorer with nine goals.
